What did I get at TCAF, you ask????

Actually I was on a pretty tight budget so I really tried hard to only get things that were close to my heart.

I made out like a bandit at the Conundrum table, getting a couple of books signed by both Philippe Girard and Michel Rabagliati.

I must have said the right thing to Philippe, because he gave me two beautiful drawings. One is Ruts & Gullies which I read a couple of years ago and loved the poetry of it. The other is his brand new book Obituary Man :-) I read it on the way home and really enjoyed it - it had the feel of a fun Twilight Zone episode.

Rabagliati also signed a couple of books for me and I love the little playful sketches. Of course I had brought my copy of The Song of Roland - which I absolutely loved and carried around with me for months (read my review) - andI also picked up his latest Paul Joins the Scouts. It was so good! Spot on in capturing a moment in time, not just an era, but also an age in a person’s childhood - and it doesn’t feel sappy or nostalgic at all. :-)

And - no surprise - I picked up a copy of Boulet’s Noirness and got it signed. (He signed my copy of Dungeon at C2E2). I kept running into him during TCAF and as usual I worry that I came off as a bit daffy, but honestly I really just happened to be there at the time. Anyway - I so hope his Notes gets translated and published over here in North America Land, and I can’t wait until he has the chance to start translating Ragnarok. :-)

Obviously TCAF was AMAZING. I meant to blog more, but I was too busy meeting some of my heroes, being dazzled by the legends, and hanging out with great friends and colleagues. :-)

“If you are as interested in sex as you say you are, there is a really lovely book about it in my study — on a top shelf. It’s red, and it’s called The ABZ of Love,” Kurt Vonnegut wrote to is wife Jane in a 1965 letter….

Link: University of Kansas showcases historic black photography online

[Ugonna Okpalaoka, http://thegrio.com] The University of Kansas is now making a historic collection of images showcasing African-American life available online.

The collection, compiled from the work of African-American photographer Leon K. Hughes, is called “African American Life in Wichita, Kansas” and features photos of the city’s black community life from the late 1940s to the 1970s.

According to the KU website, Hughes was a self-taught photographer. He and his wife, Rose, began a home-based photography business in 1946 for which he captured photos of the community for the next three decades. In 2009, his wife gifted the collection of more than 2,700 images to the university.

The collection’s archivist, Deborah Dandridge, said the photos showing weddings, graduations and church and school gatherings coincide with the arrival of thousands of African-American newcomers from nearby states and the South to the city.

“These photographs suggest how African-Americans, for centuries, refused to allow the nation’s color line deny them experiences of love, faith, dignity and grace,” Dandrige added.

The entire Leon K. Hughes Collection can be viewed here.

Je leur avais dit: “Trouvez-moi un truc écrit en tchèque, qui fasse un peu bad boy”…

Even when I can’t read Boulet’s comics (because mon francais est pretty crappy, actually) his character’s expressions always crack me up.

Besides, I’m in withdrawl after finishing the English blog archives

MY KNITTED BOYFRIEND, by NOORTJE DE KEIJZER

My Knitted Boyfriend is a cushion with a story. A cushion with a personality. A cushion to kiss! Or, well… to cuddle, to caress, to hug, and to smile with. Because this man is always happy. And he is flexible as well. He will have a mustache if you prefer mustaches. He will wear glasses if you prefer glasses. He likes to sit on your floor, on your couch or at you dinner table. But most of all he likes to lay down next to you in bed. With your head on his chest and his arms wrapped around you. This way you will never feel alone ever again. With this man you can be sure, he will never leave you.

Hilariously awesome French cartoonist Boulet was interviewed by Inkstuds (which is one of my favorite comics related podcasts).

Given that a lot of Boulet’s stuff hasn’t been brought over to the US/Canada/UK anglophone audience it’s an interesting listen. His webcomic/blog (which he’s been translating) is made of all kinds of awesome - moving easily from darkly beautiful, funny, thought-provoking and just immensely smart - it’s very refreshing.

Extra bonus - he’s also on Tumblr at Bouletcorp
