I’m sick of winter and coincidentally I found some photos from this past summer that I had never posted. Start daydreaming of the beach

We had a snowstorm roll through and it was really blustery. Not like the snow we had last week that was quietly majestic with fat flakes falling in silence. This one was more raucous and windy, slapping everything it could with a coat of slush and snow.

These are my neighborhood palm trees…
For some reason one of the apartment buildings down the street has these two plastic palms in planters by the front steps. They make me smile in the summer, but in the winter - especially covered with snow the other day - they make me dizzy with laughter.
And not in a bad way, either! I love the goofy things. :-)
Here’s a treat back 32 years to Chicago’s Dark Ages, when Mayor Jane Byrne moved into Cabrini-Green and Lincoln Park didn’t look like the tony suburb within the city it resembles today.
WBEZ’s John R. Schmidt filmed a ride on the Brown line in 1981, starting at the Belmont station and winding all the way down to the Loop. Schmidt rode an “A” train, which, as he noted, was an innovation from the 1940s where CTA divided stations into “A” and “B” categories based their traffic. (The “B” stations, like Sedgwick, saw less frequent service.)
Take a look at all the vacant lots south of the Fullerton station, which Schmidt describes as a “war zone.” It may be a bit hyperbolic on Schmidt’s part, but Lincoln Park back then—or Lakeview, for that matter—was not one of the ritzier neighborhoods in the city. (I remember when it wasn’t a good idea to hang around Wrigley Field at night; it still isn’t, but for different reasons.)
Wow! What a flashback to Chicago of yesteryear. I forgot how much the Ravenswood El line had changed.

My running around this morning took me over to Uptown and the famous Riviera Theater. Coincidentally another Chicago landmark: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Riviera_Theatre
The Riv is a great old theater and it’s one of my favorite places to see bands here in Chicago. It feels nice inside - historical but still comfortable and honestly for a room that old it still sounds really good. (The same cannot be said of the nearby Aragon Ballroom, which is gorgeous, but the sound bounces around in there like an insane cat on drugs)
I’m not a fan of neon signs by day, but I thought the old marquee came out nice at this angle showing the underside. Sort of hinting at the glitz t come.

This is the big baseball sign out by Thillen’s stadium right at the border of Chicago and Lincolnwood. It’s a bit of Chicago landmark ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thillens_Stadium ).
It looks like it’s smiling and winking, no?

This is the mouth of my train station (on the work side). There are things that I love about it that in turn make me love my city. I like how deco it is - sort of an homage to Chicago’s yesteryears.
The thing that I most love about it, though, especially at this time of year, is how the light comes through the glass of the awning, broken up by the ribs of the structure, segmenting it out like and orange slice. Through the awning the evening light always looks a little warmer to me.
Maybe that’s the dirt of the glass, though.

Crouching in the dense foliage of the Lincoln Park Conservatory’s Fern Room I was able to capture this rare image of the zoo’s rare dwarf raptors. I don’t know if the zoo was running an observational experiment or what, but there was also a dwarf Hadrosaurids and a triceratops and down closer to the water feature’s pond a miniature mastodon. I applaud Lincoln Park Zoo’s radical genetic department. Very impressive, especially given that the zoo is still open to the public for free.

I had to walk up to Michigan Ave. from the office today so I knew I wanted my photo to be of the Water Tower. I really didn’t want my photo to be “that-picture-of-the-Water-Tower” though, since it’s one of the most photographed buildings in the city.
Also, I’ve always liked the way the Tower looks against a winter sky. :-) And look! Ice!

This is Jake’s around the corner from my office. It struck me to snap it because the heavier snow had just started getting *heavy* and their string lights were still lit up. They made this really nice hazy glow in the snow :-)

There is a church across the street from the building where I work and this statue lives outside by the church. Its beautiful and for some reason I often forget all about it.
Today in a meeting I happened to look out the window and saw it from above and across the street and I knew I wanted it to be my photo today.
Not just because he’s beautiful, but because I’ve always thought angels look forlorn in the snow. In the summer with the sun shining he looks radiant and triumphant, but here - today - in the snow, he looks forlorn and stricken almost despairing.
I like that about statues in public spaces :-) I like that they can change through the seasons and mean different things to me on different days or under different skies. There is something very pleasing to my heart about that.
And of course… he’s beautiful.

This is out my front window. I was hoping to convey a sense of how cold it was today, but I’m not sure it comes off to anyone besides myself. It really was, though. The air was crisply cold and the sky was this super-super blue and the street was still dry, white and frozen.
Really for shooting the camera right out my front window (with the window closed) this pic came out better than I thought it would. I like how much the camera (Nick, his name is Nick) picked up.

Don’t you just love late afternoon in the winter? I was getting a ride home from work today which afforded me new scenery and I really liked how this shot of the Bryn Mawr train station turned out. I liked that the people waiting for the train are just almost in silhouette but you can still read the train station sign.
